taking a short cut
a fox and I
surprise each other

taking a short cut
then face to face
the farmer and his gun

taking a short cut
the cows escort us
to the other side

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

frosty night
in the rippling pool
the moon shivers

full moon
the whiteness
of the frozen pond

frosty morning
on the sycamore
still a few leaves cling

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

From now on HAIKU HOMESTEAD will be updated every week, normally on Wednesdays

Finally, a reminder of who started it all -

Haiku had their beginnings in the work of the Japanese poet Matsuo Basho 1644-1684. This is his most famous verse -

old pond
a frog leaps into
the sound of water

For those who are VERY keen, 31 English translations of that haiku can be found at -
